Lesson 10.2

Blue Highlighter = Definitely Important

ALMOST ALL OF THIS LESSON IS IMPORTANT

Miners set up camps → others moved there to sell supplies→ more people meant a call for order and hiring sheriffs

Benefits of a Transcontinental Railroad:

  • The ability to transport goods across the country quickly

  • The ability for people to move across the country quickly

  • Both contributed to fast community growth

Cattle Ranching Before Barbed Wire: cattle raised in an open range system

Cattle Ranching After Barbed Wire: Ranchers fenced their cattle

Advantages of Settling on the Great Plains: Possibly acquiring cheap or free land

Disadvantages of Settling on the Great Plains: Bad Weather (made living/farming on the plains difficult)

How did the Chinese and Mexican groups respond to discrimination?

  • Lawsuits

  • Relocation

  • Formed protest groups

Despite Discrimination, minorities played important parts in settling the west ( mostly Chinese and Mexican Groups were out west)

Situations that created tension between different groups in the west ( miners, farmers, ranchers, and sheepherders):

  • Sharing limited resources

  • damaging another supply

  • mining contaminated water

  • everyone needed water

  • sheepherders and ranchers needed the same grasslands
