Cells Parts

Part

Function

Cell Membrane

Semipermeable covering to the cell. Made of a phospholipid bilayer.

Cytoskeleton

Made out of protein filaments. Helps give the cell structure.

Nucleus

Membrane-bounded region that houses genetic material. There are pores that allow RNA to leave the nucleus.

Nucleolus

A structure in the nucleus that makes ribosomes

Chromatin

Genetic material that condenses during cell division into chromosomes

Ribosomes

Organelles made of ribosomal RNA that are involved in protein synthesis.  Located on the Rough ER or floating within the cytoplasm.

Rough ER

Has ribosomes to synthesize proteins and lipids.  Proteins made by the rough ER will go to the Smooth ER for further modification.  The proteins travel by vesicles

Smooth ER

Further modifies proteins that come from the Rough ER.  No ribosomes are present.  The proteins travel by vesicles to the Golgi Body.

Golgi Body

Flattened sacs that package proteins that came from the Smooth ER to be exported out of the cell.  Vesicles will transport proteins out of the cell.

Mitochondria

Converts food energy into cellular energy (ATP) through a process called respiration

Lysosome

Collects and breaks down cellular debris.  Has hydrolytic enzymes.

Centrioles

Helps in cellular division by organizing microtubule proteins into a spindle
